a5c7b9f00b In France, the Porter family is slaughtered while camping in the woods and only Claire Porter survives seriously wounded. She reports that her husband Henry and her son Peter have been eaten alive by a strong man. The eremite Talan Gwynek that lives in the woods with his mother is arrested by the police accused of being the killer. The defense attorney Kate Moore is assigned to defend Talan and she comes to the police station with her investigator Eric Sarin and the animal expert Gavin Flemyng to interview Talan. The unwilling police inspector Klaus Pistor is sure that Talan is the murderer but has to let Kate and her team work. There is turmoil in the precinct and Gavin is scratched by Talan. Then they visit Talan's mother Mrs. Gwynek and they learn that Talan has a rare disease. Further, the government wants her lands to dispose nuclear waste and her husband has recently died in car accident. Soon Eric discloses that the death of Mr. Gwynek was suspicious and Pistor was in charge of the investigation. When Kate succeeds in sending Talan to a hospital for examination, she discovers the effects of Talan's disease and is the responsible for the next events.
A defense attorney begins to suspect that there might be more to her client, who is charged with the murders of a vacationing family, than meets the eye.
So much of Hollywood within the past 10 years & counting have stopped caring about the film goers & just about the all mighty dollar which is why we have so many damn remakes in American cinema. Originality is dead, which is why I enjoy foreign films so much as they are always coming up with something new or revamping a story & making it their one by one upping the cool factor.

Case in point, WER. This film takes the werewolf genre and completely flips it on its head, giving a realistic & believability take on the centuries old legend. Let's start with the synopsis: A defense attorney & her council (played brilliantly & flawlessly by A.J. Cook of "Tru Calling" fame, Vik Sahay who is known for the TV series "CHUCK", & Simon Quarterman who played Father Ben Rawlings in "The Devil Inside") begins to suspect that there might be more to her suspected client, who has charged with the murders of a vacationing family.

This has a slight familiar feel to it, ala "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" but replacing the demonic horrors with lycanthropy storyline and creating much more tense environment. This film has scares & jumps galore and for those of you are are partial to the gore aspect of what goes along with the werewolf mythos you won't be disappointed either. The special visual effects are staggering realistic which one has come to expect from Gore Guru & make up genius Robert Hall (who created CHROMESKULL from the LAID TO REST films, as well as created the make up for the GRIMM & Firefly series).

The death sequences are not over the top & are disturbing enough to make you wince. Also, the transformation of our "WER" in my opinion is one of the best I've seen since American werewolf in London and the howling. Keep in mind, it will NEVER be as iconic but the realism that Baker & Bottin brought to the screen can be seen in Hall's werewolf transformation. Another thing this film brings to the table that I've never seen before is the fact that the werewolf's curse is completely and 100% described through scientific evidence and it is completely plausible even in this day and age. The filmmakers make you as a audience feel that it could be possible that this "sickness" is a very real thing which bring the horror to a whole new level of fear, keep in mind that there are some very cool WOW factors that are also thrown into the film that will make you smirk & smile at the screen in horror goodness also.

I'd also like to mention that throughout the intensity of this film, the storyline is never lacking. Starting out strong and never letting up, leading up to a very satisfying finale. The film itself is a mystery thriller until you hit halfway through at which point you are treated to fast paced non stop violent rage filled action horror film.

As you can see, I love this film. So much in fact, I plan on watching it again in the new 2 weeks. If you are a fan of the werewolf genre and want a new take on myth, stop what you are doing now and check this film out.
Finally! A werewolf movie done right! I like the werewolves in Underworld, but they're very typical of the genre; man turns into an actual wolf, rather than him remaining mostly in human form, but taking on animalistic traits of a ferocious wolf. This movie did a different take on werewolves, and I appreciated that.

I don't think there was a single weak link about this movie. I've never been a fan of werewolf movies, but this one was pretty awesome. I almost didn't watch it because these type of movies usually suck. The acting was great. A.J. Cook (Kate) did a great job in the lead. Brian Scott O'Connor (Talan) was a very imposing figure. He must be about 7 feet tall. He's massive. The others were all good as well.

I was not left looking at my watch, wondering when this would end. Clocking in at about 90 minutes, it was the right length, as was the flow of the film. There were several instances of very good suspense.

*****A Few Spoilers Below*********

A few things bothered me. First, how negligent are those police? When Talan escapes, the police and his defense team go to his mother's house and look around. Kate wanders into the barn - where Talan is - and the police come in and tell her she shouldn't be in there, and they begin to escort her out. Either they didn't think to look in there themselves, or they're searching skills are really bad. lol. Also, the very end where they talk about Pistor's involvement in a conspiracy was odd. Even though Kate suspected him, they laid no groundwork or evidence trail for anyone to discover he was involved in any conspiracy. I suspected Gavin werewolf would save Kate at the end from Talan werewolf.

I gave this an 8-star rating because I just really liked it a lot. The acting, writing, directing was very good. Some might disagree, but to each their own. I'd most likely watch this again
